See the math around you

If you’re a teacher (especially if you’re a math teacher) I guarantee that you’ve heard the classic “When am I ever going to use this?”. It’s been bothering me this last week that my students can not see math in the world around them when all I have to do is look up from my screen to be greeted it. So my problem is this: How can I show my students the math that I can see in my every day life?

Whether its the percentage signs on my cereal box or predicting my arrival time for my trip to work using my speed and the distance to travel, maths literally is everywhere for me. What math do my students encounter and how can I use this to engage them in the maths that I teach in the classroom? These are questions which I will be focusing on this week.
